A life’s winding path and all the experiences along the way…

Recent Stuff

For at least six months I have had an opossum living in a section of my backyard fence. I first saw her one late night while she was crossing the fence top with a bunch of babies on her back.

MIss Possy emerging from her den in my fence

Staying true to my very creative and imaginative self, I named her Possy.

I like having Possy as a resident because opossums are very useful creatures that eat lots of bugs, especially ticks, and are neither aggressive nor disease carriers. I actually think they have a certain cuteness however the Most Tolerant Daughter (MTD) says they are horrible animals that make a big rat look handsome in comparison.

Possy and I have crossed paths many times and we always do the same thing: I stand still and watch her while Possy freezes in place and watches me.

After a few minutes we each get bored and one of us will start to walk away.

Last night Reiko-chan met Possy. Well, it wasn’t a formal meeting or introduction. It just occurred that Reiko went outside for a pee at the same time Possy was heading out to hunt dinner.

If it were Max, there would have been Maltese howls and charges and faux attacks. (Ultimately Max was a coward.)

With Reiko-chan there was no drama. As I’ve mentioned before, she is totally non-reactive to small animals like squirrels and, apparently, opossums.

Reiko stood still and watched Possy while Possy froze in place and watched Reiko. I stood there and watched them both.

Within five minutes we all got bored with one another and each of us went our respective way,

LATE EDIT:

I was reminded that Max once had a post regarding the Racing Possums he got from Amazon. Yes, we still have those little guys and they are perched on the bookcase next to my computer desk.

Here’s the link to the Racing Possums story:

    A possum! Awesome! 🙂
I love that Possy, Reiko, and you just stop, stand, watch each other, get bored quickly, and then go on your merry ways. 😛 You three make a great posse! 😉
I do remember Max’s take on the Racing Possums…I remember agreeing with Max. 🙂
Continuing to send cheers, bestest wishes, and love to you and Reiko!
One day at a time! Stay possitive! Possum-ble things happen every day!
Okay, no more possum puns…I’ll move on now. 😉
    (((HUGS))) ❤️❤️❤️

There’s a guy I saw on X that adopted a baby opossum when its mother got killed. He raised it like a dog or cat and now dresses it up in costumes and carries it around on his shoulder. He said they are excellent pets, low maintenance, easy to housetrain and they can do tricks, too. Hmmm….maybe I could….nah.

Well, of course I had to Googe this because I always wonder about opossum vs possum. Not like it matters. Sadly, there is nothing cute about an opossum. Not like those adorable little squirrels that my cats watch intently through the windows. And you all stood and watched each other. Isn’t retirement great?! 🤣
The ‘o’ in opossum is usually silent. I had no idea…

Oh, so you’re in the same camp as Most Tolerant Daughter. Well, humph, understandable because she, too, is a cat person and yes, the shame of that reflects poorly on me. Oh my, and the oh is not silent.

I can’t see an opossum without thinking of your family.

Do they all bear a resemblance to the marsupial? I thought it was just me.

We had one on the front porch a few years ago. When anyone approached, she hissed at them. Thinking this was not normal behavior, they usually freeze, and during the day, we suspected rabies. Nope, got her into a bucket because no one wanted to take care of this on the front porch, and it was revealed that she was carrying babies in her pouch. She was relocated to the woods. Maverick would have had her for lunch. Max would have barked, sniffed, picked her up and taken her to the woods.

Funny critters. Whoever thought playing dead was the best response to getting attacked? On the other hand I guess it works. When I was back in college the girls I dated pretty much played dead when I made my romantic moves.

Love to hear from ya
