A life’s winding path and all the experiences along the way…

Recent Stuff

I’m so sorry to stick you with this mental image.

Warning: If you’re currently consuming food, stop. If you’ve ever liked food, stop. If you plan to like food in the future, proceed with caution. Things are about to get… biological.

It began innocently. As horror always does.

I’d spent weeks trying to coax our favorite Mauzer, Reiko, back into the noble art of wearing a harness and leash like a regular suburban canine instead of an unhinged woodland beast. We tried calming meds, persuasive cooing, interpretive dance. Nothing worked. I decided to avoid traumatizing her so I gave up.

Then today happened.

My little fur tornado decided to combine the will to flee with a sudden and violent case of rear-end rebellion. Yup, explosive diarrhea. Was it the calming meds? Was it a karmic reckoning for feeding her too much Cesar? We’ll never know. But what I do know is that a small, greased-up dog running at Mach 4 while spewing something that could peel paint is… a lot. Gag a maggot level stuff.

She ran like she was qualifying for the Daytona 500, only with turbo-diarrhea jets. It hit walls. It hit furniture. It hit art. Carpet bombed. The entire house. I’m fairly certain it violated several Geneva conventions.

My first instinct was to open a portal to another dimension and shove us both through it. My second instinct: containment.

I built a cattle-chute system out of 15 Amazon boxes like some tragic, panicked cardboard engineer. She was the errant cow; I was the weeping rancher. Using a beach towel like a makeshift riot shield, I herded the devil-goat-dog into the kitchen and sealed the perimeter. Finally on tile floors.

Victory was mine. Briefly.

The next chute funneled her into her crate, which by then looked like a war crime. Now came the challenge of removing the feral stink-bomb from said crate and launching her into a sink bath while not losing a limb or my will to live. So naturally, I donned welding gloves, because what else do you wear for a tactical feces extraction?

She went full demon. Hissing. Howling. Throwing shade. I think she tried to curse me in Old Norse.

Still, into the sink she went. Water exploded. The counters got baptized. The Keurig may never recover. I scrubbed her so thoroughly the shampoo bottle filed for workplace harassment.

Then came the harness. Ever tried to hook a harness onto a greased, traumatized pooch that’s actively debating your assassination? Try it one-handed. With gloves. On a slippery counter. In the aftermath of a poopnado.

By some divine glitch in the Matrix, I managed it.

The dog was clean. The harness was on. The leash was attached. The smell was… still present, but now it had notes of despair, Lysol and “Apple Cinnamon Febreze,” which should honestly be illegal.

Hateful and harnessed.

She bolted under the dining room table and is currently giving me the side-eye from her shame-nest. I, meanwhile, have spent the last two hours laundering, mopping, renting a carpet cleaner, scrubbing, disinfecting, and reevaluating every life decision I’ve ever made, including owning a dog and being born.

I will not be eating dinner tonight. Or possibly ever again.

    Chapeau! You got her harnessed!
You have my sympathy….years ago Sophie returned from the vet with a bug which she transmitted to the – then – fourteen others. A house full of vomit and liquid shit – and in the rainy season at that. Somehow the little red ribbon bow with which she returned from the vet did not quite compensate.
Those welders gloves did the trick….

    1. lois Avatar

Helen–you are a gem! I notice Tom called it everything except what you did–liquid shit.

    2. Reiko's Journey Avatar

Thank you, Ms. Devries for proving that no matter how bad something is, it could always get worse. I was never a proponent of Catastrophizing, but now I am.

  2. lois Avatar

What’s your gripe? You got the harness on, right?! 😂🤣 I have a good trick for the smell. Vinegar and water. I heard about it somewhere online…😀

    1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

Copious quantities of vinegar were deployed. But I keep thinking I can still smell something so I end up prowling around the house looking under everything, behind everything, on top of everything because she sprayed everything. It was horrific, Lois, horrific. Now she’s traumatized and I am traumatized. This house is like PTSD Central.

      1. lois Avatar

Seriously, I cannot imagine seeing this in action. I am happy she now has on her harness, but there were better ways to make this happen. My condolences, Tom.

        1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

Yeah, I had envisioned gradually working my way up to where I could gently and deftly slip on the harness but the Eruption of the Buttocks made that slow and easy plan no longer viable. Emergency! I’m surprised that I didn’t get a visit from the Jehovah’s Witnesses or solar salesmen just at peak destruction.

I told you that you guys have angels watching over you from the Other Side. They finally gave you the kick that motivated you to put a harness on Reiko. (If only you had tried the task your own, this may have never happened. 😂)

The worst occasions make for the best stories. You are going to have a doozy to share come next Thanksgiving!

(By the way, did you share any of the used bathwater with the “chipmunk” neighbor you love so much?)

    1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

Oh, I assure you Ms. Bowman there were no angels involved in yesterday’s performance at all. Beelzebub, Lucifer, Beetlejuice, all those guys – they were definitely involved. The house was Hell’s Cesspit and even this morning there’s a certain off-putting aroma wafting through the halls.

  4. Bitey Dog Avatar

Bright and early tomorrow, I want to see a post about how you took Reiko for her first drag around the neighborhood. 😆

(Baking soda containers set around the house may help absorb some of the poopocalypse aroma. Lava rocks might help too.)

    1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

Baking soda? This level of stink was far beyond the curative powers of baking soda. We’re talking flamethrowers and a nuking from orbit-level putridness. Lava rocks would work were they fresh from the volcano and burning the house down. I checked my insurance to see if this was perhaps an option. As for walks, you need to realize that this dog has reverted to adoption day fear levels although one bright spot is she came closer for treats this morning. Trying for a walk/drag would be piling trauma on trauma and that’s just me – it would be worse for her.

      1. Bitey Dog Avatar

OK, tomorrow is soon enough for the drag. 😆

Dogs love routine. If you walk/drag her every day, she will come to look forward to her adventures.

        1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

Tomorrow looks good – it’s an off day from the gym. When she knows I am leaving for the gym it is impossible to get near her.

          1. Bitey Dog Avatar

Step on her leash while she’s eating, if you can. That was one of my tricks.

            Good luck tomorrow!🍀

I saw this and thought of you. Are there any hints that might help?

Thanks for the link. Yeah, there are a couple snippets that I may be able to apply. The thing with Caesar’s shows are that they are carefully edited to demonstrate success and a lot of the intermediate efforts are not shown. He shows up, does dog magic, and all is good. Having said that, there are nuggets worth mining here, especially interpreting what a dog is saying with body language. Right now, for example, Reiko’s body language is saying “I hate you and what you did to me yesterday and I will never forgive you in 100 years.”

              1. Bitey Dog Avatar

                Typical teenager. 🙄

      2. Bitey Dog Avatar

Funny, I was going to recommend a flame thrower but thought better of it.

A friend took care of her husband who had dementia. He went through that phase where poop fascinated him, and he smeared it everywhere. After scrubbing the whole house, she said that opening the windows and letting fresh air and sunshine in seemed handle the last of the bad smells. I hope your California sunshine can help out. (Although I hear that outdoor pooping is all the rage in your state. Maybe this is the next big Glade scent?)

        1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

The weather has been the saving grace in all this. We have been enjoying almost summer-like days with temps in the low 80s. I opened every window and installed the old dog gate in the garage entrance so I could leave the garage door open too for more air flow. The flamethrower option is still on the table in the event of a repeat performance – dogs love routine, don’cha know.

So funny, so glad it’s not my house. At least Reiko is clean and nicely dressed. For the smell, try KOE, which stands for Kennel Odor Eater. It’s the best. For the little pooper, poor sick baby, maybe yogurt? I doubt that it will be enough, but it’s a start. Also the vet used to sell me something called Phosphaluvet. No idea what it would be in the States. And for me, well, I don’t actually need breakfast this morning.☺️

    1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

Hmm…new products to lookout for. Good morning Mr. Amazon! I am glad that Reiko is a peanut compared to Sky. A dog the size of yours with that same ailment would be create a situation beyond human endurance. This morning her deposit was in much more acceptable condition, thank you Jesus and Allah and Buddha and Dr. Seuss and everybody else.

Oh, my! 😮 Oh, my goodness! 🤢
Butt…I think this is one of those stories where there is a moral…you know, where we learn something…like…hmm…that good and sweet-smelling can come after bad and stinky?! 😉 I’m sure there are other things we learned, butt I’m just gonna’ hush. Oh, except to ask…
Did you use vinegar in the clean up?
Did you wear a hazmat suit?
Has your home now been sufficiently christened?
Is sweet little Reiko feeling better?
Are you gonna’ apply for a job as a Crime Scene Cleaner?
After all of THAT, what did you dream about that night?
Okay…I’ll go…as in leave, not as it poop…
    (((HUGS))) ❤️❤️❤️
    PS…great title!
PPS…I was gonna’ leave a poop emoji…butt you’ve probably seen enough poop for a lifetime.
PPPS…is it wrong that I laughed at some of the things you said. ???

    1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

“Butt” – I saw what you did there. 😂 Yes, vinegar was used as well as Lysol. Mr. Clean, some kind of enzyme cleaner/deodorizer/ the liquid you add to the carpet cleaner solution and some dish soap too. It’s hard to overstate just how widespread the desolation was. Strangely I slept very well last night despite spending the first 5-10 minutes thinking that I still could smell something.

  7. Tynecastle Avatar

What joy for you. I think it is time for a dog psychiatrist.
The dog needs proper mental care, or this may happen frequently.
    All you need is cash.

    1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

The dog won’t lie on the couch for therapy. Last night was one of the few times I didn’t care if it was whisky or whiskey so long as it dulled the anguish.

      1. Tynecastle Avatar

You poor man, you suffer so much. That’s what happens when you care.

        1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

          I know, I’m practically a saint.

  8. marthadilo3 Avatar

Omg that is just horrible. You’re going to be smelling the smell for days even if it isn’t there. Eww. She was probably scared of the stuff coming out of her butt. Well Iredell a cup of coffee….umm maybe not.

    1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

Thank you, cheerful spirit, for the prognostication about future smells. I was scared of what was coming out of her butt. My God, how could so much even fit in a dog that size? This was Chester-level quantities in a 12 pounder.

  9. Xena and Lucy Avatar

OMD! Yep, I visualized this the whole way through. Thankfully, I was done with my celery with almond butter breakfast. WHITE vinegar is the best. It neutralizes the odor. Maybe a mindless, day-long binge of your favorite TV show…with a beer…or 10.

    1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

Last evening I sat in a stunned stupor. There was Olympic curling on TV and that was perfect for my non-existent attention span. I stared at it for an hour or two and found it soothing. I had turned into a zombie.

      1. Xena and Lucy Avatar

Well, glad you didn’t eat Reiko’s brains!

        1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

I didn’t want to eat anything. My appetite still has not returned.

          1. Xena and Lucy Avatar

Wow, so sorry about all that. Even though I have a strong constitution for that kind of thing, that was just way too much, and I’d be right there with you, zombie-ing out.

            1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

Me, too. I have an iron gut and can handle biological tragedies in stride almost always. But this was an “urple’ moment that transcended everything I thought I knew about shutting out smells and sights and carrying on.

              1. Xena and Lucy Avatar

I applaud you for not setting the house on fire to get rid of it all.

                1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

Just when you think you’ve experienced the worst…today I was scrolling Reddit’s r/dogs forum and there is a post titled: “Last night my Akita expressed its anal gland son my face in bed.” I kid you not.

I’m feeling pretty darn good right now. I got off easy. 😁

                  1. Xena and Lucy Avatar

While I could just barely imagine what you went through, I cannot even begin to imagine having an akita or any dog do that to me…

                    1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

So bad I had to blog about it.

  10. Julia Avatar

Julia- I laughed so hard. 🤣

Nox – I would eat rotten peanuts the squirrels buried during the day and overnight I would explode out of my butt. I would try to turn my butt so I was shooting out of the crate. I didn’t want that stuff in the crate with me. I wasn’t always successful keeping it out of the crate. Poor Luna was sharing the crate with me. She was always desperate to get out. DogMom and DogDad would have to wash me, the bedding, the crate, the floor, the heat baseboard, and wall. At least I wasn’t running around spraying the entire house!😁

    1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

Misery loves company so thanks for the Nox tale. Not to be too indelicate but man oh man, can those little dogs ever blast out the ass. I’ll never tell my ever so popular colonoscopy preparation stories at the dinner table again.

      1. Julia Avatar

Yes, it is amazing how much they can shoot out their butts. I don’t see how it all fits in those small bodies!

We were grossed out when the dogs shot out their back ends. Luna was smarter. She only ate rotten peanuts once and after her back end exploded, she never ever ate them again. While Nox is normally smarter, she didn’t make the association of rotten peanuts and backend explosions. Nox would eat them every chance she got. We did yard patrol to find the rotten peanuts the squirrels dug up and left. In a bit of heresy, squirrels were smarter than Nox about the rotten peanuts. 🥜🐿️😆🐕‍🦺

        1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

You can be sure that the squirrels, vile creatures that they are, were laughing at the dogs and pointing their little squirrel fingers as they mocked them. Rotten peanuts, you say? I wonder if my neighbor might enjoy that culinary treat?

          1. Julia Avatar

It might be fun to see what happens if he tries a rotten peanut. 😆

Love to hear from ya
