Ooh Baby, Baby It’s a Wide World. No doubt you remember those lyrics from the1970 song by Cat Stevens. Later, Cat became Yusuf but I still think of him as Cat. None of this has anything to do with today’s post.
Reiko is mistress of her backyard. She happily goes and comes on her own schedule through the back door.
Recently, I began experimenting with introducing Reiko-chan to the wide world outside her front door. My thinking was that she’d be curious and it might lead someday to a trial walk on leash.
I know, I know, that’s a long shot.
I started by opening my front door and placing her doggie gate across the entrance. This way, the sights and smells of the world outside are accessible to her (sounds, too, but she’s deaf) while she stays safely inside the threshold.
So far, the experiment has been a complete failure. She could not care less about what happens outside the front door.
Cars pass by, dogs are walked on the sidewalk, children play on adjacent lawns, the trash truck rumbles along…but the Mauzer is indifferent. She doesn’t even approach the gate to observe these events.
It doesn’t seem scary to her. She does not appear frightened by the open door at all, and she will saunter by the gate if her intended path takes her in that general direction. Aside from a casual glance, she simply ignores the outside world. Mind you, there is a very nice sidewalk, pee-worthy bushes and lots of green grass just feet from the entrance, but even these attractions have no appeal.
I guess Reiko is a true indoor doggie.
