The Brain Trust

The Mauzer is not that smart, but I’m also not the brightest bulb in the sock drawer. I mean, when it comes to brain power, the wheel is turning but the hamster is dead. You get the idea.

Thing is, Reiko and I are having relationship issues and neither of us can figure out why.

Since the beginning of the year, Reiko has been regressing. She seems even more terrified of me than before and scurries off at instant of my appearance. She has lapsed totally in her housetraining and seems frightened of going outside.

She still sleeps under the bed and will still come and take treats from my hand, but she does so without any confidence.

I have to say it is disheartening. We are approaching the 3 month point in our relationship and I had hoped we’d be further along. An occasional pat or chin scratch. Maybe sitting closer than10 feet away or at least not reacting as though I was Satan incarnate each time we meet.

Oh well, I know some dogs take more time than others so we’ll continue on, but neither of us seem to know how to transition from room mates to family.

We’re dunces.

Are there doggie shrinks around you? Doggie psychics? There are dog trainers who can read animals as readily as they read us. I’ll tell you a story. Maybe you can find something helpful in it. I had a friend whose dog hid every time she pulled out a camera. Drove her nuts. So my sister and I toddled over and sure enough, that’s what happened. Kathy pointed out that every time doggy ran under the table, my friend tried to coax him out with a treat. In effect, the dog thought he was being rewarded for hiding when the camera came out. So, could you be doing something that Reiko misinterprets? Another story. As my first dog got older, she became more assertive. It wasn’t war, but it wasn’t fun. I took my terrier to sheepherding classes. She liked it. I liked that she figured out that we worked better when we worked as a team. My suggestion? Find an expert who can read the situation and provide some lateral thinking. Good luck.

You make a lot of good points. I think I know someone who fits the bill. Maybe I’ll give her a call and ask her to stop by for a consult ($$$) and maybe she can break us out of this rut. I liked the camera story – it’s easy to misinterpret inter-species signals.

That is disheartening. You are not dunces though. It reminds me of the cool hand luke line, what we have here is a failure to communicate. They say for two steps forward you take one back. It’s got to be frustrating.

By nature I tend towards impatience so I have keep a tight rein on expectations. This may just be a reaction to it raining here for the past weeks and she hates to go our on the patio when it rains.

God bless you both. I think the first suggestion of getting a doggie shrink…or at least a therapist…is your best bet.

It makes sense. I may give it until the end of next week when we have had sunny days again and see how things are. Then, maybe a shrink call.

There are times you just come to a plateau….while both parties work it out. You did say you were reducing her sedative…..could that be a factor? I don’t think another dog would help at this stage….if you had already had an older steady dog that would have been a different matter.
With her history, interaction is something strange to her….and she’ll take time to think it through.

Yeah, well said. This could just be a bump in the road and she is still figuring out how things work in her new house. She has been off all sedatives for long enough that there is no hangover influence. This a sober dog. A sober dog that runs from her landlord.

Aw. 🙁 Poor little Reiko. Poor you. I’m so sorry to hear about this. 🙁
First of all…you are NOT dunces. And all of us here care about both of you.
    ❤️❤️

I would communicate what is going on with the vet. Also, see if there are any dog behaviorists in your area to talk to.
I know there are some online places to ask questions/share info and get a response from dog trainers, therapists, behaviorists. Plus there are a lot of articles on line on all subjects pet related. There are groups on Facebook. ETC.
I’m sure you’ve probably already googled all of this.

One that I’ve heard is good is:

Please keep us updated. As I said…all of us here care about you two. We want to help if we can. We are cheering you both on. We want the very best for you.
    (((HUGS))) ❤️❤️❤️

BTW: Is she still on the sedative? Has anything indoors or outdoors changed recently that might be confusing to her?

Thanks for the kind wishes. The behaviorist route sounds pretty reasonable to me right now. Never ran into this before. My experience is that dogs settle down and recognize quickly that they are in a safe environment especially since the house is serene and it’s only me. Or maybe I’m just an ogre. I do a lot of online research but so far haven’t hit on tips that actual produce results but the search continues and thanks for the link.

        Yes, keep searching.
        You’re welcome.

This is disheartening. Did this start when she got off her leash? I don’t know that that would be a factor but just trying to think of why Reiko is regressing. Is she still responding to the sign language you were doing? I like the idea of a therapist taking a look to, hopefully, give you pointers and get back on track. She was doing great for a while there.

Poor you and poor Rekio. I hope you two can work it out.
