A life’s winding path and all the experiences along the way…

Recent Stuff

Whoa! Not TOO close there, big boy. (And yes, that’s actually me.)

Over the past weeks, Miss Reiko has been getting more comfortable being closer to me.

I see this most when I am in my home office. Reiko will quietly walk in, jump on the couch and ensconce herself on a throw pillow that seems to be conducive to deep, doggy naps.

No, that’s not a furry throw pillow. Just acts like one.

She’ll stay in her spot undisturbed, even as I move about the office from file cabinet, between computers, printers (I have 2 desktop computer set-ups, one for the foundation and one personal) and the bookshelves. That’s a recent development from before when my slightest move set her scurrying for a safe place to hide,

Don’t bother me.

Another time that I see her getting more relaxed is when we first get up, usually just after 4AM. She now strolls just behind me from the bedroom to the kitchen and then out the sliding door to the patio where she will wander off for that first pressurized pee. Before, I would have to offer food snacks to get her to go outside, now she fires out on her own and returns looking smug and much more comfortable.

A third development is that she will sneak up to me while I am on the Recliner of Sloth and sniff my leg not realizing I can feel her little whiskers, but I stay very still. I realize my leg must smell divine (like the rest of me) but her surreptitious exploration suggests she may be feeling more at ease.

So maybe there’s been some melting of the ice. We’ll see.

    That’s a great advance!

Maybe just a small advance but I’ll take whatever I can get.

Miss Rekio, take your time. While Tom thinks he smells wonderful, I know that he is rubbing bacon on his leg to get you to come closer. He is luring you with the food of the gods.

    1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

No, sadly, I think I come by my pork smell naturally. But after some initial confusion, she now agrees that bacon is wonderful and should be served frequently.

    2. Rowena Avatar

I’ll have to pass on the bacon scent tip to our daughter who has been trying to get our fairly anti-social dog, Rosie, up on her lap.

      1. Julia Avatar

While Tom denied it, I still believe he rubbed bacan on his leg. 😆

Tom sent these bacon treats to Nox. Nox loved them. https://retirementrvdream.com/2025/12/13/treats-arrived-for-nox/ Maybe Rosie could be lured with bacon treats.

This is much more than baby steps. She’s gonna be curling up in your lap soon and demanding belly rubs.

As they say, “From your mouth to Dog’s ears!”

This is great. Reiko is going at her own pace. Definitely a melting of ice.

    1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

Yes. Her slow, some would say glacial pace since we’re doing ice metaphors today.

What terrific progress! Patience is truly a virtue with shelter pets. The 3-3-3 rule is a general guideline (shelter dogs should be given 3 days to decompress, 3 weeks to start to know your routine and 3 months to start to feel at home) but sometimes it takes longer. Elsa was feral when I adopted her and it took longer for her to feel totally comfortable. That’s where the patience part comes in. So happy she’s finally coming around. Bravo to you both!

    1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

Reiko-chan’s 3-3-3 rule is measured, I think, in months and years only. None of that short term stuff for this Mauzer.

Elsa’s integration took a couple of years to totally get her to be the sweetheart she was. Sam taught her how to become a dog but it was Norman who got her to enjoy it. ❤️‍🩹

I need to get my Doggie Ouija Board out and summon Yosemite Sam and the Ninja for a little counseling session. Or maybe just borrow Wilson for a little face to face time and training.

          1. Tails Around the Ranch Avatar

You’d be better off with seance with Norman. He was such a positive influence on Elsa. I credit him with teaching her how to wag her tail which she almost never did before him.

            1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

              That’s it…I’m calling out to Norman….Max, pass the word….

            2. Rowena Avatar

Monika, I hadn’t realized that Elsa was so troubled. So heart breaking. Hard to understand how anyone could treat a dog so they end up like that.

              1. Tails Around the Ranch Avatar

Thanks, Row. She was basically feral when I adopted her. She had no idea how to be a dog initially but through patience, love, Sam and Norman, she turned into one of the sweetest dogs around. I miss her every day, just like I do the boys but she was a different kind of special.

                1. Rowena Avatar

That’s incredible she changed and healed so much. Shows the power of love!

Thanks. It took years, but she was still very special and once anyone earned her trust, she was 100% devoted.

I certainly loved her from afar!

OH, MY GOSH! This is sooooooooooooooo wonderful! 🙂
    Yes, I am crying joy-tears! 🙂
I’m so proud of both of you…you for being loving and patient (and ETC…all good), and Reiko for going at her own pace and letting her trust develop in her own time. 🙂
    (((HUGS))) ❤️❤️❤️
PS…Oh, so you FINALLY took a shower and Reiko was like, “Okay! Finally, the dude smells better! I think I’ll give him a sniff.” 😉 😀 😛 😁

    1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

Actually, I think I skipped showering after the gym that day. So my fragrance was especially delightful, if perhaps pungent. It attracts all the ladies so even Reiko is not immune.

      1. doesitevenmatter3 Avatar

I’m pretty sure dogs don’t mind any of our body smells…they are kind to us…and our smell is how they ID us easily. 🙂

        1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

I agree. The fact that I can be ID’d by scent from the next zipcode doesn’t matter.

          1. doesitevenmatter3 Avatar

‘Tis true! Embrace the smell(s)! 😁

I’m a little worried about your arm in that picture. Are you feeling alright? 😂

I am so happy to read about Reiko’s progress! It feels extra wonderful when you can win the trust of someone who was once so afraid. 💕

P.S. How is the foundation growing?

    1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

You mean your hand doesn’t detach to pet dogs? How unusual. Yeah, the curse of AI when manipulating actual photo imagery – it ALWAYS screws up a hand or finger or something. So, yeah, let’s put AI in charge of stuff like nuclear weapons, the stock market, boring stuff like that. End rant. Foundation is coming along. Slowly but faster than Reiko.

      1. Bitey Dog Avatar

I dunno, detachable limbs might be a good thing. Knee aches? Just take the leg off with AI!

Slow but steady is a good growth rate for both puppies and foundations!

        1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

I can think of two or three jokes about detachable body parts and 5 of them are dirty. I think I’ll just shut up and let this one pass.

Awesome progress! Bit by bit, you’ve made her comfortable and trust you. I love reading about you two.

    1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

Oh, we’re not quite there, yet. I still cannot touch her or sit together. We have a long way yet to go and maybe I am seeing progress where there’s very little actual accomplishment but I’m keeping a positive outlook on this roommate situation.

Who is that young man in the photo…?

    1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

Devilishly good looking, isn’t he? Ok, maybe not. Nice dog, though.

  10. marthadilo3 Avatar

I am having trouble liking or commenting so this may not make it but OK she’s adorable putting her little paw out. That’s a real advance that she will sit by you! What a cutie!

Love to hear from ya
