She won’t give in without a fight.

Yesterday was Reiko’s follow-up Vet appointment. You may remember that the appointment a few weeks ago got canceled because the little bundle of trauma (as Monika so aptly described her) was judged too upset to get her vaccination injections.

The Vet gave me a prescription for 2 Xanax tablets with the instructions to give Miss R ½ tab an hour before the appointment. I did that and as usual, the medicine had no measurable impact on the pooch. I swear that little dog is immune to sedatives. Nevertheless, I got her into her carry crate and deposited la doggo at the animal hospital.

I dropped her off at 7AM and they said they’d call when she was done. Okey doke, so off to the gym.

About 9 I got a call to come pick her up. I asked how she did and I was pleased to hear that her overall health was quite good, no problems to report. How did she behave? Well, according to the vet tech, she was uncooperative and reportedly “kangaroo’d at the end of the exam table and tried to leap off multiple times.”

The vet tech said they did not do as complete an exam as usual because the Monster Mauzer had to be “held down by several techs.” Mind you, this is a 12-14 pound dog not a Tibetan mastiff.

Reiko was quite happy to see the animal hospital in the rear-view mirror. I released her at home and she strolled into the house calmly, sporting an air of indignation. The treat I offered was accepted, but not graciously.

With the vaccinations completed we can now license the pup and she will again be street legal although she never is on the street.

Oh my. Hope your state has a 3-year rabies rule, bumped up from what to used to be a one year. Have you though about letting Reiko teach classes to other small dogs?

    1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

Yes we have a 3 year rabies vaccination but the other two are annual. In any case a yearly wellness check makes sense. She seems a very healthy little dog so far, the only note being that she still has one baby dog tooth but no action is indicated right now. If I could monetize her skills at resisting any touch, she’d be a valuable resource to the home finances but she doesn’t like people and isn’t interested in other dogs.

That sounds like more success. The trauma was hidden at the vets, and they have the scratches.
She appears happy to come home, more success.
    Well done that man!

I had the same thought…she seemed very pleased to get home. I’ve noticed, too, that when I leave the house she now stays near the door I used to exit. She actually waits for me! Of course, as soon as I enter again she runs off and hides.

        Sounds good!

Just curious, do you know if they used a muzzle with Reiko? Murphy was so freaked out when I first took him to the vet they put a “distraction muzzle” on him. The techs said that for some dogs, they are so disoriented by the sensation on their noses that they forget to fight.

Glad your little girl is healthy and protected from rabies!

    1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

I don’t think they did. The reason I say that is because during her prior visit they asked if I would give permission for such a muzzle and I said yes and thy replied they always ask in advance. Interestingly, she showed no sign of residual trauma after the appointment. She went right back to usual behavior as if the visit never happened.

Maybe she’s the type of girl who enjoys a little drama?

        1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

I know that sometimes the terror she pretends to exhibit when she sees me is 100% baloney and she is doing it purely for effect. So, yeah, drama could be part of it.

            Ah, the teenage years…

I love her kick-boxing photo–you go, girl!! Home is a comfort for her, Tom. Great news on that front. Reiko knows where her comfort zone is and the vet’s office ain’t it! She really is sedative-resistant, isn’t she? Anyway, glad this behind you. And Reiko!

When she is at home she really is a happy little dog. She explores her backyard on her own. She chooses where to sit but it is always in my line of sight even when that line of sight is from one of her “hiding” spaces. Evenings she chooses either a recliner or loveseat and sets up there to watch TV or relax as I read, again always in sight. Even when I jump in my hot tub she parks on the chaise and and keeps company. But she just won’t make the next leap to touch.

Awwww, sweet Reiko has more than her share of quirks! But not as many as you Tom!

It must be disorienting for her to be in the vets with more than one person tending to her, their hands are moving all over, they’re moving her into different positions, sticking her with needles, and she can’t hear a soothing or loving word from any of them.

Same thing at home. She sees your movements but can’t hear your soothing words. That’s really very sad. So I actually think she’s doing damn good. And so are you my friend. Reiko couldn’t have found a more perfect dog dad, and you couldn’t have found a more perfect companion.

So glad she’s healthy and you don’t have to worry about rabies.

By the way, any good news on the suicidal opossums?

The good news on possums is that there are no possums. I fixed the fence gap so no more possum residencies are possible. Too bad in a way because I liked the critters but after the last two episodes, enough is enough and too much. I often think that if Reiko could hear me singing around the house that would have a positive effect and then I realize, no, that would drive her to despair and probably drowning herself in her water bowl to ease the misery.

I’m sure Reiko would agree she is living her best life, getting all the best care possible from you…despite her attempts at ignoring your existence! Deep inside her beautiful little frightened soul, she knows she is loved! All the best to you both!

This may the strangest dog-human relationship ever. She and I happily go through our days and are polite to the other and reasonably respectful but there is absolutely none of the normal affectionate behaviors or signs that we are anything other than room mates.

Love how Reiko is kickboxing to make those mean techs get away from her.

At least she returned to normal when she got home, even if there was a little stink eye about the experience.

    1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

It was quite heartening to see her return home unfazed by the “trauma” (real or imagined) at the Vet. She acted like I had imposed on her to take the appointment and now that it was done, fine, but just leave me alone.

      1. Julia Avatar

That does seem to be very positive. She appears to understand that you will come to get her and take her home. Home has become a safe space.

She’s got spirit! That’s why you chose her, right? With any luck she will get over her snit and not pout about it. The nerve of that vet.

Spunk. Remember Lou Grant and Mary Tyler Moore? “You got spunk. I hate spunk.”

I can almost picture some sort of white, whirling Tasmanian dervish going after the vet techs. Poor thing. You cna’t help but feel badly that she’s so distraught. Here’s hoping she won’t hold a grudge so you can once again be allowed to work out at the gym.

    1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

I love the Vet Tech description that she “kangaroo’d” at the end of the table. She is amazingly fast and it is easy to underestimate how well she can dodge and weave when avoiding restraint. The notion of multiple techs required to hold her down had me smiling too. “That’s my girl…”

I love love love that Reiko is feisty, vigorous, her own woman, isn’t gonna’ take crap from no one and ETC! You go, girl! 🙂
I think this shows us that she is comfortable and feels safe in her home. She feels loved by you. (Again, Tom, be grateful every day she lets you stay in her home. 😉 ) I think it shows that she will continue to do things in her own time when she is ready. I admire all of that. 🙂 I love that she likes to watch TV…a way to be “in the world and see what’s going on” without having to actually be in the world with all the strange people and weird happenings. )
Oh, and so glad the vet-trauma is once again behind her!
I am so proud of Reiko! 🙂
And I am proud of you Doggy-Daddy! 🙂 Keep doing what you’re doing! 🙂
(((HUGS))) and ❤️❤️ for Reiko and for you!!! 🙂

It’s true that she has claimed this house as her residence. She is no longer a visitor or uncertain what her rights and roles are. She can be a little bossy, too, for instance when she spots me having a snack and nothing was offered to her. She is a bit of an actor, too. Sometimes when she sees me approaching quickly and directly at her she starts doing this funny little crying whine like she is terrified. I’ll typically look at her and say “Bullsh…” and all of a sudden she sits down and pretends she was just kidding all along.

Love to hear from ya
