A small, quiet ceremony.

Today is Memorial Day, a somber day, a national day to give thanks.

For me it is also the day of Hawaii’s  Toronagashi (灯籠流し) or Lantern Floating Festival, an event that was meaningful to the AJF and I. You’ve all seen the photos of the lanterns as they move gently on the tide out to the reef at Ala Moana Beach Park.  Their departure symbolizes guiding the spirits of ancestors back to the afterlife.

To be present and participate in this event is something you’ll never forget. It hits differently when you are standing elbow to elbow with so many people all focused on the memories of their departed loved ones. So much sadness but so much hope.

Lantern Floating
I still belong to you, and I let you go with love.

Having Memorial Day and the Lantern Festival synchronize seems fitting, no?

I wish I were there today. But I guess I’ll have to just float a “toro” on the nearest available body of water. And raise my flag from half-staff at noon.

The Mauzer can help out.

I didn’t know they did the lantern ceremony in Hawaii. The photograph you shared is stunning.

It is a huge event there owing in part to the large number of residents of Japanese ancestry but the event is open to all. We lived quite close to Ala Moana Beach Park and would walk there in the evenings so when the Toronagashi was taking place, we’d be there most of the day helping out or just sharing the vibe. It’s become more commercial of late and has (to my mind) lost a bit of the spirituality that made it special but it is still a special occasion. Floating the lantern on the hot tub doesn’t quite resonate the same.

It does seem that anything that is beautiful and lovely becomes commercialized.

What a beautiful commemoration for the dearly departed.

It is amazing and while it is deeply rooted in Japanese, specifically Buddhist, tradition part of what makes it special is that so many people from such incredibly diverse backgrounds, faiths, ethnicities, etc., come together and immediately relate to what is happening and how each other is feeling. When it’s over and the people start to leave there is this astonishing feeling of oneness among the participants as if for at least a few minutes, we as humanity might actually get it together.

We can use a few more moments like that these days.

Tom, watching those lanterns floating in the ocean was absolutely mesmerizing! What a perfect way to commemorate the lives of our loved ones who are no longer here with us. I was so moved watching the video that I can’t imagine what it’s like to witness this ceremony in person.

Thank you so much for sharing this. So sad that the ever-present commercialization has touched this solemn ceremony. Why we humans can’t come together on an everyday basis boggles my mind.

It’s a special time. At the start of the event there’s much going on with music and chanting and speeches and stuff but then comes the opening prayer and when the Buddhist monk (a lady)opens her mouth and starts to speak, the entire beach park goes silent, absolutely silent, and from there things proceed until to the launching of the lanterns by the families. Everyone hopes for an offshore breeze that will carry the lanterns to the reef (where they are later collected by volunteers) but sometimes if the wind isn’t right, they just sit still or even return to land and then there’s a great good humor effort by everyone to carry the lanterns a little further out and re-launch them along with some encouraging small splashes to send them them on their way.

What a beautiful picture of all the lanterns floating out to see. I believe I would never forget that experience, either. Please tell Reiko one of her fans is thinking about her, so be a good girl.

Love to hear from ya
