He was a good opossum. A little flea bitten, but a good opossum. Rest in pieces.

I happened again.

They say lightning doesn’t strike twice in the same place but clearly that cliché does not apply in the world of death-obsessed opossums.

This morning while watering the begonias, I again caught a whiff of what could only be decaying marsupial. Yes, an opossum is a marsupial. The only marsupial in North America.

The tale of the tail.

I’ll spare you visuals. This one photo of the tail sticking out from between the fence boards should be enough explanation. The exact same spot from which I extracted a dead relative just a short while ago.

What’s going on? Is this the opossum equivalent of the Elephant Graveyard? Do opossums get together over a beetle lunch and make funeral plans to visit Tom’s fence?

I realize I run a charitable foundation focused on end-of-life issues, but does that mean I have to be surrounded by terminal backyard animals?

I think I’ll monetize this action.

What a disgusting way to start one’s day. Breakfast is on hold. Maybe lunch, too.

But now I know why Reiko was scratching more and I’ll spend my Saturday doing intensive flea surveillance around Chez Roommates.

Speaking of the flea ball, I mean fur ball, her Vet visit yesterday was a failure. She was deemed too frightened to handle three injections without some form of tranquilization. So, we got booted and rescheduled for the end of the month and given a script for Dog Xanax.

Not batting 1000% lately, And so it goes.

Time for a new deodorant in that corner.

Well, at least Miss Reiko didn’t kill the little bugger in the living room, then haul it to her happy place, under your bed. 🤢 Doggy Xanax sounds good. Have you tried Virbac’s Zenidog? It comes in a collar form and also a diffuser. The first Amazon review for the collar sounds like that family adopted Reiko’s soulmate. It worked for them. I like the Virbac brand. Being me, I’d go collar and diffuser and Xanax, but maybe that’s just me.

If only the death had been as civilized and decent a the first photo. Do you know if they are getting in your side or the neighbor’s side of the fence? Do you think they get in and then can’t get out?
We used to have to tranquilize our big 70 pounder Riley. Then he talked us into going to the vet that my son used to take him to, and he went in there smiling and wagging and happy through every procedure. So strange. We eventually switched all the dogs to that vet to make it easier. Xena still shakes.

Well, the good news is that Reiko isn’t a cat who would drag that sucker into the house and probably leave it in your chair for you to admire. Are these opossums bent on doing HariKari?

Wow, I sure hope this sweet girl hasn’t become a flea refuge again. Is there any way in that graveyard behind your fence you could plant something with thorns that would send them scurrying to areas unknown, like the percolating Mt. Etna!

I like Bizzy’s suggestion. Sounds like a good plan of action. I feel bad for both of you. You get points for managing to have a sense of humor about it.

Having only seen one or two opossums in my life–I live a sheltered life–that looks like one heck of a long tail. How are they getting into your yard? So this little bugger was alive when Reiko saw him…how did he die if she didn’t kill him?
Heck, Reiko doesn’t need any shots! She has work to do to protect her human from the terrors in the backyard!

When I saw your title, I wasn’t sure if you had another dead opossum or another Poopocalypse. Although still awful, I’m glad it was the opossum.

Was Reiko just having a bad day when she had to go to the vet? I was hoping that she would feel more comfortable after having had a few visits.

Love to hear from ya
