A life’s winding path and all the experiences along the way…

Recent Stuff

I was promised a glass slipper.

Saturday has always been housekeeping day at Chez Roommate.

It surprises a lot of people to learn I don’t mind house cleaning; in fact, I sort of enjoy the process. On Saturdays it takes me about 4 hours to do the whole house including laundry, excluding windows.

Reiko is OK with the usual Saturday chores. Perhaps a mild existential resignation. She doesn’t mind the vacuum cleaner because she cannot hear it. She seems a little concerned when I mention that she looks like a large dust mop.

She is definitely not thrilled when I mop the tile areas with a vinegar solution. “Look, DogDad, I like pasta salad as much as the next dog, but we don’t have to put it on the floor.”

Mopping tile with a vinegar solution is a real old time trick. (“Olde Tyme” in expensive neighborhoods) I doubt many guys do that.

That got me to thinking about men who do housekeeping. In my experience, most male housekeepers fall into two categories: totally useless and really good. There’s little middle ground.

I learned how to do my chores from old biddies. Seriously. It was the old ladies in the family who considered little kid me as free labor and would gladly deploy me, bucket and mop in hand, to make things shine.

It’s funny, when the AJF and I first married, she thought it was absolutely unacceptable that the man of the house would do something so menial as scrub the tub and toilet. She believed 900 years of ancestors were figuratively slicing their bellies with super sharp swords in shame. That was one of the few battles that I won…or was surrender a clever strategy after all? Hmmm.

Anyway, since I’m an early bird, I finished the cleaning before 10:00 and will now move on to washing the car.

Your wife had the right idea.
It’s what women were made for!

Of course. Cleaning, cooking and small engine repair. Everybody knows that.

The pictures of Reiko are so cute! Vinegar solution. Doesn’t the house kind of….smell bad after the cleaning? Does Reiko run across the wet floor and leave little footprints all over it? I’ll send my cats over so they can show her that cute trick.

No, if you use no more than a 1:1 blend, the vinegar smell dissipates very quickly. Here’s the spark joy part: as it dissipates it chemically removes other smells too. It is a fabulous deodorizer. (Not that pet owners ever face strange odors.) It can be used so many ways but you have to remember that it is an acid, a weak acid, so never on porous stone, slate or that kind of stuff where acid can eat into the material. No need to send the cats – Reiko already knows and practices the wet footprints over the entire house routine.

I use vinegar too. In fact on this old house they said that’s all they use on floors. I put a little in the fabric softener cup in the washer too. It’s good for cleaning just about anything!

Yup, also to descale shower head, open clogged faucet aerators, clean glass, and on and on. My favorite use is to microwave a bowl of 50/50 water and vinegar for 2-3 minutes to steam-clean the microwave, then wipe away residue. Yes indeedy, vinegar is greatly underestimated. Plus it’s much safer and better to be around. (I sound like a lobbyist for the vinegar association.)

I like the smell of vinegar! It reminds me of coloring Easter Eggs! 🙂
And it certainly is good for cleaning! Back in The Dark Ages my mom had us use it cleaning windows, mirrors, faucets, showerheads, etc.
Good on you for being such a great housekeepin’ dude! I know Reiko is a good supervisor…keeping both eyes on you whist you clean. 😉 🙂
I feel fortunate…my hubby is great at helping to clean the house inside and out…and our son is, too. Our son’s wife always thanks me that I taught him how to clean, do dishes, do laundry, etc. 🙂 He’s always been a great helper! 🙂
    (((HUGS))) and Happy Sunday!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Somehow I guessed that you had probably trained up your menfolk to do their fair share and to do it properly. My boy is like me in that regard and his wife also is thankful she got a pre-trained husband. He also makes a pretty mean fried rice. Yay vinegar!

It’s more that they are generous, kind and helpful…I didn’t do much training with them.
YAY for men who can cook! Mine do! Another thing I appreciate greatly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂

Sadly, most of my cooking skills involve grilling. I’m a bit of a whiz with a microwave, too. Other than that I know a lot of ways to cook pasta and can make a mean Spam musubi.

I’m not sure whether to believe this or not. On the one hand, artists are notoriously sloppy. There. I said it. It’s true and it’s been proven. STEM types are often incredibly fastidious. Then the great unwashed in between. I don’t know how I’d go about getting independent verification of your DogMom’s purported slovenliness so I guess we’ll just have to take your word for now.

      1. Bitey Dog Avatar

So you don’t think mom is artsy? I can verify the fartsy part. She certainly is a slob, anyway…. Murphy

        1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

No, I KNOW your Mom is artsy. I just don’t know if she is a slob and let’s face it…your reputation for doggie veracities is, well, slim.

How funny that all the cleaning doesn’t bother Reiko. I dislike cleaning, but would rather clean than cook. My hubby is great at both. Unfortunately, in his own words, he “doesn’t see dirt unless it’s as big as a VW.” That’s what had me concerned one Saturday when I was downstairs grooming dogs and heard the vacuum running upstairs…

Well. if the Hubster can cook and clean, I’d say sit back and enjoy it! Paraphrase Peggy Lee or the Enjoli commercials, “He can bring home the bacon, fry it up in the pan…”

LOL! That’t the plan for after he retires.

    Hi Tom,
It’s Saturday afternoon here, and I don’t know how you manage to get your housekeeping done in three hours. I get 6 hours of cleaning support and still seem to be doing a lot. That sa id, I’m currently trying to do a major cull, which is now into its second month I think. Our son wants to have people over for his 22nd birthday in a few weeks and there needs to be a major heave ho. Oh goodness! Shame you are in America. I’m sure I could match you up with someone over here without any disrespect to the AJF.
We have a TV show here called Married At First Sight (MAFS). Not sure if you have it over there. Here’s the link: https://www.9now.com.au/married-at-first-sight I’d never watched it before but recently found out my cousin Tyson will be appearing on the show as an Intruder groom. He has strong opinions and is anti-woke whatever that quite means. So now we’re all watching the show and getting into all the intrigue. I think these reality shows fill a gossip void. Well, at least, I’ve had a gossip void as it’s not acceptable to gossip and especially put down your friends, but these people have made targets of themselves and a great topic of conversation with all sorts. I don’t watch much TV but back in the day my mum and her mother would talk about what was going on in Days of Our Lives and the Young and the Restless. No doubt that rings a few bells with you. My grandmother lived in Queensland and was ahead of mum so she’d get a sneak preview when she went up to visit.
I guess I’ve been thinking of all of them going through all my grandmother’s cards etc. She never threw any of them out and each one was precious. This has been wonderful as all sorts of stories and family intrigue (almost as good as MAFS) have been captured for posterity but I feel bad throwing the more mundane ones out.
Anyway, hope you’ve had a great start to your weekend.
    Best wishes,
    Ro

My secrets to fast housekeeping are 3: never skip cleaning day, move like a whirling dervish and most importantly, live a one-story small house. I’m surprised that you did not delegate the cleaning to your son in advance of his friends’ visit. So it sounds as though the reality TV addiction has perhaps infected you? I rarely watch TV so I’m out of the loop on the currently popular shows but I’m out of most loops anyway so nothing new there. Going through old stuff, heirlooms, and collectibles can be addictive as TV. It may be the ultimate rabbit hole and once you enter, be prepared to spend a lot of time reminiscing. Often bittersweet, no? Thanks for the weekend wishes and I I hope you had a good one, too! Tom
