This is a dog-free post. If you’re not interested in hearing an update about my foundation project, please keep on scrolling.

Oh, you’re still here? Well, alrighty then.

I’ve launched my tiny charity. It’s a memorial foundation in honor of the AJF (Alpha Japanese Female) who you may remember from the Within The K Streets days. Machiko passed away just about a year ago from pancreatic cancer.

The charity is a 501(c)(3) California public benefit corporation which basically means donations are tax deductible but let me get in front of this: this blog post is 100% informational to blog friends and NOT a request for donations. In fact, we only operate in California for now although I hope to expand to Hawaii, so don’t even think about it. OK, now that’s out of the way.

The foundation name is “Machiko no Ishi” which means “Machiko’s Legacy.”

Machiko’s Legacy gives to hospice patients and other patients with life-limiting illnesses, a cute plush Maltese dog – a stuffie – for them to hold and cuddle.

Our Plush Maltese Stuffie

This notion of gifting Maltese stuffies was inspired by Machiko’s hospice experience when I gave her a plush stuffie that resembled Max the Maltese. That story is told on the website.

In hospice there comes a point where words are not very useful and the availability of a gentle little companion who is non-judgmental, present 24/7, and soft to the touch is meaningful. There’s a lot of science backing that up, not just me.

Anyway, the best way to see what I’ve been up to is to visit the charity website on desktop or mobile, your choice: Clicky the linky.

www.machikonoishi.org

If I’ve done a good job on the website, you will clearly grasp all the ins and outs of how the charity functions.

You will also see a lot of personal information and a collection of AJF photos on the Our Story page. I did a lot of the site design (with some professional help, too) and wrote all the text, of course.

It has been very difficult for me to wrap my head around the notion of putting personal information in front of the public, but obviously that is necessary for the foundation to achieve its purpose and hopefully become sustainable. It’s a lot easier to talk about dogs.

Anyway, that’s the news. I’d be obliged to hear your comments and criticisms. I won’t be bringing up the charity on this blog anymore unless it somehow intersects with dog stuff.

Have to maintain the intellectual purity of stories like Poopocalypse, don’cha know.

I’m sorry that a project as beautiful as this is so bittersweet to you and your family. 🥲

On my tablet, on the Home page, I believe you want lines between the bullet points under The Gentle Power of Plush, but on my screen they are strike-throughs. I can send you a screenshot, if you’d like.

Yes please, send a screenshot. Is that the only place where alignments are off? Tablets are a toughie because they bridge between desktop and cell and have weird ways of re-sizing images. What kind of device do you use?

What a beautiful, loving tribute to both Machiko and Max. May many souls find comfort from plush Maltese stuffies your charity provides.

The funny thing is that because of patient privacy and HIPAA and such, I will never know who it was that got a plush companion. Not all bad…that means I can use my imagination!

You may get thank-you notes from the families.

I hope so. We encourage them to provide anonymized feedback and I’d like to hear the stories. That would be encouraging. But when I started on this silly project a person said something that struck me:

“Most of the good in the world
          Is not audited by applause
          It’s just done.”

I made that into a poster and have hung it on the wall. Your possy print stares at it all day.

I agree with the quote. Still, it is always heartwarming to hear the good you do makes a difference. (Possy must have a lot to think about!)

Bruce and I have volunteered at various parks for clean up and trail work. The managers or rangers have always expressed their gratitude. While hundreds of feet might travel on the trails we worked on, the owners of those feet know nothing of us, but enjoy the work we did.

I hope you will include a section on your site for any thanks you receive. People who donate like to feel a connection with the recipients.

Colorado has a Colorado Gives Day site that allows donations to Colorado charities to be made in one place. Maybe California has something similar?

I’ll probably not blog about it here because, well, that’s not what this silly blog is about. But most of us talk a bit offline too, in our private chats I’ll happily share updates. And yes, I’m chasing all sorts of donation options, the tick being to spread the net wide but focus on the prime targets and not get pushy. This little charity will never scale into a big operation ( and I don’t want that) so our goals for fundraising are modest.

I sent you an email with the screenshot. 😊

Yes, that was the only problem I encountered. So far, everything looks great!

Thanks for catching it. I’ll dig in and try to correct. There’s always one thing that doesn’t co-operate, right? (Actually I’m surprised there weren’t more.)

The website is a touching legacy to the AJF (and precious Max as well) and is beautiful. I love the idea of providing hospice patients a physical presence to comfort them as they begin their transition journey. When my Mom was in hospice the first time, Sam laid with her. When she finally passed 5 years later in a second round at hospice, those special memories were a comfort. Her palliative team were extraordinary for which I will always be grateful. Profound kudos on creating a beautiful and positive legacy in a world that’s filled with far too many things that aren’t. Bless you; sending you my best wishes as you move forward with your mission. Good luck. ❤️‍🩹

Thank you Monika! That was a thoughtful and sweet message and sharing your personal story was much appreciated.

How wonderful! God bless you for what you’re doing. Of course I did miss another story about the Poopocalypse, 🤣

Well, yeah, we got to keep our eye on the ball here, right? This is a silly dog blog with a preference for stories about disgusting canine behaviors. It would do the world a disservice were we to lose our focus. 😁

OH! This is so wonderful, important, loving, sweet…excellent! (Yes, I am crying joy-tears! 🙂 A perfect tribute to Machiko and Max! You three are going to help SO MANY people! I know Machiko and Max are smiling…they are so proud of you! And I am proud of you, too! 🙂
Please keep us updated on how things progress. I know it will be a success! 🙂
    (((HUGS))) ❤️❤️❤️
PS…I know I already told you this, but my maternal grandmother had a dog stuffie on her bed her last years of life…my mom received it…then wanted me to have it…so it is being passed down and will continue to be so…bringing comfort, joy, support to many generations in my family. 🙂

Your plush story is lovely and if maybe one of the charity’s stuffies becomes an heirloom that would be icing on the cake! People asked me about the AJF’s own stuffie and thing is, she asked that when she passed she wanted it to be cremated with her, I think because she started identifying it with her memories of Max. So it was.
