I had some bacon in the refrigerator that was approaching its use it or lose it date so I fried it this morning and offered Reiko her first taste of bacon
She doesn’t like it. Totally rejected it.
I have the only dog in the universe that does not like bacon.

That would be my youngest, Pumpkin. She would eat the bacon. She eats anything: lettuce, tomato, cheese, fruit, cake, bread, cucumber, dish towel, sponges…
Two years ago this Christmas I was at the emergency vet, dropping her off for surgery after she, unbeknownst to us, ran off with the kitchen sponge and devoured 3/4 of it before we found her under the dining room table. The sponge (a new one) is in a locked Tupperware case near the kitchen sink now. You should seriously consider having Pumpkin over so she could show Reiko all the good stuff to eat in your house. 😺😹
The Pumpkin story is so funny….a sponge. Poor Pumpkin for having to go through surgery but I imagine it was also hard for you to have much sympathy for her when you got the Vet bill for sponge removal surgery. I have so many treats accumulated but Reiko keeps giving paws down. Peanut butter, chicken, Cesar meals…yep, that’s about it.
The emergency vet is really a godsend–I had Teemu (remember him?) there twice. You don’t get in the door before handing over your credit card, but they know their stuff. The hardest part was when I was picking up Pumpkin, there was a boxer who had been struck by a car. His people were told it would be $750 for x-rays to be done. Their response: “I don’t have $750.” I felt so bad, but I was choking on Pumpkin’s bill. I wish I knew what became of that dog.
Of course I remember Teemu, how he got his name, everything. Emergency vets runs are incredibly stressful and they put you in a financially vulnerable position. Hopefully you get a Doc who is competent and honorable because in the moment we’d all do everything possible to help our pet. I recall an emergency vet run with Max the first time his congestive heart failure caused him to collapse. Late night, all known vets closed, critical condition. We found a place about 25 miles away, 24 hour vets and a few hours later and $950 later max came home. We were lucky that we could swing that vet bill; many cannot.
Reiko, Nox wants to know why you don’t like bacon. She said, “How can a dog not love bacon?🥓
Nox then assured me that she loves bacon 🥓 and would like more than the tiny bits we give her.
My experience with dogs is that they are generally crazy about bacon and would eat it until they explode. I never saw one take a sniff, give a small lick and then stare me down as she walked off and never returned. I’ll make up a care package for Nox and send it over.
Nox would be thrilled! Bacon 🥓! Bacon 🥓!

Bacon Refusal Syndrome…they’d probably commit her to the Sanitarium for Taste Deprived Mauzers.
Too close to the sell by date?
I used the universal male food test and sniffed it. It smelled OK to me and nothing was crawling on it so I figured it was good to go. I’m still vertical so I guess it wasn’t spoiled. I think she’s just very persnickety. I’ll remind her that there are many dogs in the shelter who would sell their canine soul to even get a sniff of fresh cooked bacon. Or the starving dogs in China, yeah, that’s a good one.
That was an argument used when I was in junior school on a young lad who did not want to eat his cabbage – not that I blame him, it was an era where cabbage had to be boiled to death and the aroma spread round the school at about nine thirty for lunch at twelve.
Informed that starving children in India would be glad of it he brightened and suggested sending it to them…..sent to stand in the corner of the canteen and missed his pudding.
I can remember once telling my Mom she could send my uneaten food to China and had a similar unhappy result.
Reiko must have discriminating tastes…or maybe she is just holding out for the whole hog…snout to tail and everything in between??? 😀 Ha! 😛

You might be on to something. Bacon and peanut butter is a combination that’s popular, maybe Reiko wants me to put a dab of PB on to the bacon before serving it to her.
