Our Hero

The recent neighborhood conversation about the Senpai Dog concept surfaced a new question; namely, is Reiko really a Maltese-Terrier crossbreed? A Merrier?

Or is she actually a Mauzer; in other words a Maltese-Schnauzer cross?

The Maltese part is pretty certain given overall body shape, tail, hair (not fur), and other typical Malt characteristics. But then there are the differences: height, narrow face instead of round, slight “pinch” on the nose, and ear positioning, etc.

Here, take a look

First, let’s start with Reiko-chan.

Now, let’s look at 3 known Mauzers, images harvested from AI.

MAUZERS

And now, 3 known “Merriers”, a name I made up all by myself.

MERRIERS

So, gentle readers, what’s your verdict? Not that it matters in any way.

Reiko looks like the middle picture in each selection. Of course, my cats chose Mauzer because it sounds like Meow-zer. I think you need to put a hat on Reiko and repost. heh, heh, heh. ๐Ÿ˜†

So did you push a button or are you trying to thread the needle with a non-committal position? Commit!

(When Reiko settles down she is in for the full gamut of dog apparel – I have ALL of Max’s old costumes and as you’ll recall, there are tons of them.) ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

haha! How could I un-see what poor little Max went through with the holidays?! Oh, Reiko-chen, it is going to be one fun ride. OK, ok. Going with Mauser. I Voted!

Yeah, I really tortured that little Malt with costumes. When I recently pulled down the box marked “Max’s Stuff” from storage even I was shocked at how many hats, vests, boots, dinosaur costumes, etc. he had. In those 300 or so “Max’s Stories” linked on the left, a lot focused on Max wearing something no dog should have to accept.

Oh my gosh! Reiko absolutely looks like a Mauzer! I canโ€™t unsee it.

    1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

I got to admit the Mauzer looks like the closer match but I’m not sure. I guess I could pay a bunch of bucks and get a dog DNA test done. You know, dip into my Sam Adams budget. Nah, that’s not going to happen.

Also, Iโ€™m impressed you were able to create a voting button. Those are some high tech shenanigans right there and Iโ€™m thinking of the wide range of doggo questions up for grabs. Just saying.

    1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

I wish I could claim technological superiority, Suzanne, but WordPress now has a simple “poll” widget that is pure click and done. Otherwise I’d be floundering (not fishing for compliment, snorf) as I usually am with WP. I can’t tell you how long it took me just to set up this silly blog. Well, I can tell you but then I’d have to shoot you to keep the secret. ๐Ÿ˜ I, too, foresee poll opportunities in Reiko’s future.

Hmm, Reiko really does look like a Mauzer based on those pictures!

Just by appearance, Murphy looks most like an Australian Terrier. My brother got sick of people trying to guess the dogโ€™s background and sent a DNA test kit. Hey, it might be a fun activity for Tipsy Amazon Ordering Night!

    1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

So, like, how much do those tests cost? Ballpark figure because I’ll probably reject the idea anyway if it jeopardizes my Sam Adams budget. And how’s the accuracy? I guess one never really can tell since the dog cannot talk. They could say “Oh yeah, Reiko is 40% Ethiopian Spitz and 25% New Delhi Curry Dog with a sprinkling of Maltese” and who can prove they are wrong?

      1. Bitey Dog Avatar

Whoa, I take that suggestion back. When my brother sent the kit, it only cost around $40. I just checked Amazon, and the cheapest is $72. Curiosity might not be worth that much beer.

        1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

Especially since they can just make up any combo they like and not have to prove accuracy! But I won’t reject the notion totally. Curiosity can be a powerful motivator, especially if beer is present at the same time.

Definitely seems to be a Mauzer! All such cute faces, but Reiko is cuter! ๐Ÿ™‚

By the way, and I’m sure I know the answer to my own question…you are talking to her a lot, right? I talked aloud to Coop. A lot a LOT. We had some interesting conversations. Often I would even give him a running dialogue on what I was doing or not doing, and etc. He’d usually tilt his head toward me and gaze at me in fascination…as if he understood every word I said. But I know he heard “Blah, Blah, Blah. Supper. Blah. Blah. Blah. Ball.” I’m sure he only listened for the words that he loved. I’m sure it was a male-thing…you know, selective hearing. ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜›
Between the fun-words I probably sounded like the adults when they talked (so rarely) in the Charlie Brown cartoons. (“Wah wah wah.”) ๐Ÿ˜€

Cooper was a Shorkie…his mom was a Yorkie and his dad a Shih Tzu. The elderly lady we got him from was his mom’s hooman. It wasn’t a planned thing. It was more like a “hit and run”. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ The lady lived in a home behind the Denny’s restaurant. The family of Coop’s dad was one of her neighbors. I liked to tell people that Coops was conceived behind the Denny’s dumpster late on a Saturday night…and that his papa was a rollin’ stone. Some people laughed, most looked at me weirdly. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Hey, it’s okay! I’m used to it!

(((HUGS))) and โค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธ and it was fun to vote! ๐Ÿ™‚

Cooper’s origin story!!! Love it! Love it!

It’s hard to believe that you like to talk, Carolyn, you’re so reserved and quiet on the blog. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Well, I do what you used to do – I talk to Reiko but it’s really more like talk in a direction other than Reiko because face on, eye contact conversation scares her still. So I look elsewhere but address my remarks to her and since she doesn’t recognize her name, it’s like talking to myself which isn’t a problem for me at all.

But here’s the kicker and it is indeed frightening…I sing to her, too. You have to understand The Hague has declared my voice a crime against humanity and canines. I am banned in 37 nations from even humming. Little children are scared into good behavior by Moms threatening them with a few of my tunes. BUT, do I care? Heck no. My house, my rules, my (cough) music. Today is cleaning day so that called for my upbeat mix. By the time I got through Aerosmith and AC/DC, I think I heard Reiko begging for mercy. Tomorrow is ballad day and that will really test our budding relationship.

      1. doesitevenmatter3 Avatar

HA! ๐Ÿ˜€ Good! Keep singing to her! ๐Ÿ™‚
Yes, I sang to Coop, too. ๐Ÿ™‚

        1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

Yes, I know. I understand it brought tears to Cooper’s eyes. Actually, it drove all of us to tears.

Have you tried her with the bagpipes?…Cynically one might expect her to come running to you for refuge should you play her ‘Too long in this condition’. Alternatively friends and neighbours might encourage you to sing instead….

Mine are accustomed to the dulcet tones of the english commentators on Test Match Special……but rise rapidly from their slumbers when an australian commentator is let loose and start pawing me…..probably to turn it off.

    1. Reiko's Journey Avatar

I must admit that the idea of using bagpipes never crossed my mind. I can’t imagine why I didn’t think of that. Oh, yes I can…because they are BAGPIPES. You know well the long standing feud that exists with the neighbor (hedgehog in the Nativity Scene, Karinto candy disguised as poo, etc.) so you will understand that introducing the Devil’s Clarinet into the current dรฉtente would likely ignite nuclear-level retaliation. And that’s before considering what such an antagonistic instrument would do to my little dog’s hearing. No, Helen, NO.

btw, Monika over at Tails Around The Ranch has been asking after you. You might stop by (https://tailsaroundtheranch.blog/) and try peddling your bagpipe idea over there.

I hadn’t forgotten the neighbour at all……just tell me what the poor sap can do that in any way equals the bagpipes…..come to think of it, even better, the reveille of the highland regiments …pipes and drums playing ‘Johnny Cope’….at sparrowfart. Either he moves or you do….
I do tune in to Tails Around the Ranch……she always has some great photographs on there…not to speak of Wilson!
I misread your heading and was wondering how little Reiko had turned into a rifle….or acquired one….

Love to hear from ya
